Short answer: yes — within a medical framework. Cannabis is still available to visitors in Bangkok, but the rules changed in mid-2025, and knowing how the system works now will save you confusion (and keep you completely on the right side of the law).
What changed in 2025–2026
Since June 2025, cannabis flower in Thailand is regulated as a controlled herb under traditional-medicine law. In practice that means purchases go through licensed dispensaries with a consultation step, rather than the fully open retail scene of 2022–2024. Thousands of unlicensed or non-compliant shops have since closed — the venues still operating properly are the ones that follow the framework.
Can tourists still buy cannabis?
Yes. Visitors follow the same process as Thai customers:
- Be 20 or older and bring your passport.
- Complete a short consultation — licensed dispensaries work with Thai-licensed practitioners who assess you and issue the required prescription (known as a PT33). It's a brief, routine step, done in person or via approved telemedicine.
- Purchase within your prescription — up to a 30-day supply.
The three rules that actually matter
1. Don't smoke in public
Public smoking is prohibited and carries fines of up to 25,000 THB and possible jail time — prescription or not. Consume in private or at an appropriate licensed venue, like a dispensary lounge designed for it.
2. Never take cannabis out of the country
Exporting cannabis from Thailand is a criminal offence, no matter what's legal at your destination. Whatever you buy, enjoy it here.
3. Don't drive after consuming
Treat it like alcohol: no driving, no motorbikes. Bangkok's taxis, BTS and Grab make this an easy rule to follow.
How to choose a legitimate dispensary
With stricter enforcement, choosing a licensed venue matters more than ever. Look for: a visible license, staff who ask your age and walk you through the consultation step, clear labeling, and budtenders who ask about your experience level rather than rushing a sale. If a shop skips all of that, walk on.
