Bangkok has quietly become one of Asia's most relaxed cities for cannabis. If it's your first time, the experience is friendly and low-pressure — but a little know-how makes it much better. Here's everything a beginner needs.
Is cannabis legal in Bangkok?
Cannabis is widely available at licensed dispensaries across Bangkok, and shops operate openly in popular areas like Silom, Sukhumvit and Ratchaprarop. The sensible rules are simple: it's strictly for adults 20 and over, you should consume in appropriate venues rather than on the street, and you should never drive after using. Pregnant women and anyone on medication should check with a doctor first. Regulations can change, so a reputable, licensed venue will always guide you on what's allowed today.
Where do you actually buy it?
At a dispensary, a "budtender" helps you choose. A good shop will ask about three things before recommending anything:
- The effect you want — relaxed, sleepy, energetic, social, creative or pain relief.
- Your experience level — first time, casual, or regular.
- How you want to consume — flower (the dried bud), pre-rolls, edibles, or drinks.
You can browse a live menu before you arrive — see the Herb Haven menu for current strains and prices at each branch.
Beginner dosing: start low, go slow
This is the single most useful tip. Cannabis affects everyone differently, and the effect can take time — especially with edibles. A safe approach:
- Flower (smoking/vaping): a tiny amount, 0.1–0.25 g, then wait 15–20 minutes before more.
- Edibles & drinks: start with a low dose and wait a full 60–90 minutes — they hit later but last longer.
You can always have more; you can't have less. Pace yourself and keep water nearby.
Indica, sativa, hybrid — the 10-second version
Indica tends to be relaxing and good for the evening or sleep. Sativa tends to be uplifting and social, better for the daytime. Hybrid sits in between and is a friendly choice for beginners. (We go deeper in our guide to cannabis strains in Bangkok.)
Etiquette & staying comfortable
Be respectful of the venue and other guests, don't mix heavily with alcohol on your first try, and tell the staff if you ever feel uneasy — they do this every day and will help you settle. The goal is a relaxed, enjoyable experience, not an intense one.
Herb Haven is an open-air rooftop dispensary, bar & lounge with friendly budtenders in Silom (open 24 hours) and Ratchaprarop.
